ProRes - defined.

Gary Adcock has an excellent overview of Apple’s ProRes codec over at the Pro Video Coalition site.

Not only does he discuss concatenation tests where he runs the same clip through compression and re-compression some 10 or 100 times, he also uncovers a bit of interesting results about how the higher-compression ProRes is actually easier to work with than ProRes(HQ). .

I’ve been using ProRes & ProRes(HQ) as well as XDCAM EX from SxS cards on the PBS cooking series Healthy Flavors and I had encountered similar results. I was surprised by how the more compressed ProRes didn’t seem to tax my processors the same way as ProRes(HQ).

Thankfully it looks to be a win-win situation with ProRes and our cooking series. We can utilize ProRes, use 30% less hard drive space, and less bandwith to the hard drive,  and actually get better performance with an imperceptible quality difference.

I like it when a plan comes together.
